Weezer, often referred to as the Blue Album, is the self titled debut studio album of American rock band Weezer, released on May 10, 1994 through DGC Records. Produced by Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, it features a catchy, power-pop sound with shiny, major-key guitarwork. Recorded at the Electric Lady Studios in New York, it was informed by a few internal conflicts such as guitarist Jason Cropper being sacked and Brian Bell taking over. Surrounded by singles such as “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly,” and “Say It Ain’t So,” this record became an iconic hit, catapulting the album to triple platinum and found its place within one of the defining records of the 1990s.

The second studio album from Weezer, Pinkerton, was released on September 24, 1996, and is worlds apart from the sheen of their debut. Taking inspiration from his time at Harvard, frontman Rivers Cuomo junked his initial idea for a rock opera in favour of something darker and more brutal. Self-produced for a live feel, Pinkerton addresses thoughts of loneliness and frustration over rock stardom, paralleling Cuomo’s own struggles. Its title is taken from the character BF Pinkerton in Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly and gives meaning to Cuomo’s conflicted emotions. The album which was a lukewarm reception when it dropped and was also underperforming commercially has since then gone through critical revision and has been influential in emo and alternative rock.

Weezer’s third studio album, self-titled but more commonly known as the “Green Album,” was released on May 15, 2001, marking the return of the band to action. The lukewarm reception of their last record, Pinkerton, Weezer went on hiatus and then regained popularity via the Internet. For the Green Album, Rivers Cuomo stuck to more forthright songwriting with simpler, less personal lyrics. Maladroit is Weezer’s fourth studio album, released on May 14, 2002. It is the first Weezer album with Scott Shriner, who replaced Mikey Welsh on bass. The album was self-produced, featuring a harder rock and metal-influenced sound than that of their previous work. During production, Weezer updated their website daily with full demos of the songs. Some unfinished tracks, due to this, hit the radio, and it only further accelerated the friction with Geffen Records. Make Believe is the fifth studio album by Weezer, released on May 10, 2005, through Geffen Records. Finding the band returning to more emotionally tender lyrical content, as found on early albums, it commercially was one of their most successful albums to date thanks in large part to the hit single “Beverly Hills,” which granted the group their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. Even though Make Believe peaked number two on the US Billboard 200, critics’ reviews were rather lukewarm, noticing how the lyrics this time around were much simpler compared to previous albums. Raditude is the seventh studio album from Weezer, which came out on October 30, 2009. It became the last release by the band issued under DGC, Geffen, and Interscope Records. Entitled from a title suggested by actor Rainn Wilson, the album includes a cover image of a dog named Sidney published in National Geographic. Its first single, “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To,” dropped in August 2009. Raditude dropped at number seven on the Billboard 200, selling 66,000 copies during its opening week and a total of 240,000 through September 2010. The album received a mixed critical response. “Pacific Daydream” is the eleventh studio album by Weezer, which was released on October 27, 2017. It is their second release under Crush Management and distributed through Atlantic Records. It is some sort of a departure from the band’s previous sound in some modern pop direction. The single “Feels Like Summer” was the single leading to this album to debut on March 16, 2017, and later “Happy Hour,” which is a song that came out as the second single off this record. The work that started with Rivers Cuomo delving into some dark material resulted in a pop-rock set called “Pacific Daydream”.
