Having sold more than 13 million albums in the US alone, Tool established themselves as one of America’s most enduring and unpredictable acts with an ever-evolving brand of muscular but mind-altering sonics, a wry sense of humor, and a mystical aesthetic that attracted a cult-like following of devoted fans with just a handful of albums spread across decades. Tool discography consists of five studio albums, one box set, two extended plays, four video albums, fifteen singles and eight music videos.

The band formed in early-’90s Los Angeles, after Keenan—who had been performing with the theatrical visual project Green Jellÿ—and guitarist Adam Jones teamed up with drummer Danny Carey, another Green Jellÿ associate. They emerged with a heavy metal sound on their first studio albumdebut, Undertow(1993), spawned the propulsive hit “Sober”, and became a dominant act in the alternative metal movement with the release of their follow-up album Ænima in 1996. Their efforts to unify musical experimentation, visual arts, and a message of personal evolution continued with Lateralus (2001) and 10,000 Days (2006), gaining critical acclaim and international commercial success. Over time, the band’s studio albums emerged less frequently—2020’s Fear Inoculum came 13 years after the band’s previous album, 10,000 Days—but became more intricate; the music took cues from prog metal, space rock, stoner metal and post-rock.
