 Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is Outkast’s debut studio album, released April 26, 1994, through LaFace and Arista Records. This seminal work sprang from Atlanta’s growing hip-hop to fruition with the duo-andré 3000 (André Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton)-being friends since their preteen years. They tapped the production team Organized Noize to do this new Southern hip-hop with elements of live instrumentation and funk and soul. The Album traces themes of urban life and coming of age and reflects the truths of Southern culture. ATLiens is an innovative second studio album by the American hip-hop duo Outkast, released August 27, 1996 on LaFace and Arista Records. It was largely recorded in various studios in Atlanta. Great combination of outer space-inspired production along with samples of dub and gospel in this album. Outkast, as well as Organized Noize, collaborated to produce their first-ever self-produced album. Thematically, ATLiens touched on the existence of an urban existentialism tendency, and the feeling of alienation, symbolized by the name—a fusion of “ATL” and “aliens.” From 1996, the album hit number two on the Billboard 200 chart; critically acclaimed, it was eventually classified as double platinum to establish it as among hip-hop’s greatest albums.

Aquemini is the third studio album of the great hip hop duo OutKast. Released on September 29, 1998, the title cleverly merges the Zodiac signs of its members: Aquarius (Big Boi) and Gemini (André 3000). Recorded entirely in Atlanta, Georgia, this album is an absolutely outstanding evolution from previous work, ATLiens; thus, usage of live instrumentation and influences derive from such styles as 1970s funk, southern soul, and psychedelia. Lyrically, Aquemini touches on themes of individuality, human nature, and interpersonal relationships- all of which received critical success and commercial achievement, reaching a peak at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. “Stankonia” is Outkast’s fourth studio album, brought into the world on October 31, 2000, by LaFace and Arista Records. Coming from Stankonia Studios, freshly acquired in Atlanta, was the most groundbreaking collection of styles ever heard-a fully functioning fusion of funk and psychedelic aspects coupled with the genius of Southern hip-hop. André 3000 took a more melodic path to move away from more traditional rap while Big Boi kept true to the duo’s signature flow. Lyrically, this album explores issues of sexuality, politics, and African-American culture. Known to the press and public, “Stankonia” launched at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with hits like “Ms. Jackson,” which topped the Hot 100. Outkast’s Speakersboxxx/The Love Below was released on September 23, 2003. This double CD album runs over two hours and is the fifth album from the innovative duo consisting of Andre 3000 and Big Boi. What began as separate albums became, under the guidance of André 3000 and Big Boi, this final project as a duo. Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx is a pure exemplar of Southern hip-hop and progressive rap sounds, while Andre 3000’s The Love Below has lots of pop, funk, jazz, and new sounds reminiscent of the great Prince. It had an eclectic mix of collaborators, with names such as Sleepy Brown and Ludacris, and multi-hit singles of “Hey Ya!”.

It won Grammy Awards, in addition to becoming the highest-certified rap album in history worldwide, with over 11 million copies sold. Its influence would revive the double-album concept in hip hop and further popularize socially conscious themes within the genre, cementing Outkast’s place in history.

On August 22, 2006, Outkast finally released their sixth and last studio album, Idlewild, which also happens to be the musical film of the same name. Heavily borrowing from the masterpieces of jazz, the blues, and swing, this album showcases the group’s want for experimentation while abandoning the concept of rap. Although not exactly well-received by most critics because of their almost unorthodox approach, the album sold 196,000 in one week and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Five singles were released from this album before it was later certified platinum; it remains one of the boldest and polarizing chapters in the Outkast legacy.
