Following the moderate success of his debut album “Illmatic” (1994), Nas took a more polished, mainstream approach with this release. Produced primarily by Trackmasters, the album deviated from its predecessor’s raw, underground style and embraced mafioso and gangsta themes. Notably, it introduced Nas’s short-lived supergroup, The Firm, which included Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega. Originally intended to consist of material from sessions for his previous album, I Am…, it was delayed by one month due to bootlegging. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and being considered one of Nas’s weaker efforts, Nastradamus achieved commercial success, debuting at number 7 on the US Billboard 200 and selling over 232,000 copies in its first week.
