Avenged Sevenfold (abbreviated as A7X) is an American heavy metal band hailing from Huntington Beach, California. Formed in 1999, the band’s current lineup includes vocalist M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, bassist Johnny Christ, and drummer Brooks Wackerman. Known for their diverse rock sound and dramatic imagery in album covers and merchandise, Avenged Sevenfold initially emerged with a metalcore style on their debut album, “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet.”
This sound continued on their second album, “Waking the Fallen,” before evolving into a more traditional heavy metal style with their third album, “City of Evil,” their first major label release. Despite facing the tragic loss of their founding drummer, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, in 2009, the band persevered with ex-Dream Theater member Mike Portnoy, releasing their fifth album, “Nightmare,” in 2010. This album debuted atop the Billboard 200, marking their first number one debut. Drummer Arin Ilejay joined the band in 2011 and performed on their sixth studio album, “Hail to the King,” released in 2013. However, Ilejay departed in late 2014, and was replaced by Brooks Wackerman.
The band’s surprise release of their seventh studio album, “The Stage,” in 2016 showcased a move towards a progressive metal sound. Their eighth studio album, “Life Is But a Dream…,” released in June 2023, further demonstrated their willingness to experiment with new sounds. “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet” is the debut studio album by Avenged Sevenfold, released on July 24, 2001, through Good Life Recordings and later reissued on March 19, 2002, through Hopeless Records. The album, though initially selling only 300 copies in its first week, has since sold 370,000 copies worldwide, with 310,000 in the United States as of November 2010. The title references the Book of Revelation, specifically chapter 11, symbolizing the end of the world. Notably, Valary DiBenedetto, M. Shadows’ future wife, provides vocals on the track “The Art of Subconscious Illusion.” The album was also released on vinyl for the first time in the US in 2008.

“Waking the Fallen” is the second studio album by Avenged Sevenfold, released on August 26, 2003, through Hopeless Records. It marked the debut of lead guitarist Synyster Gates and bassist Johnny Christ. Despite an initial modest reception, selling 3,000 copies in its first week, the album achieved gold certification in 2009 and has sold over 693,000 copies in the US. By March 2021, it had attained platinum status in the US, gold in Canada, and silver in the UK.
